Serena Williams Loses and Becomes a Philosopher

Serena Williams says everyone has their problems and losing in the first round of the French Open just happens to be hers. The 13-time major winner added that she has more than enough worries on her plate but will carry on.

She gave short attention to her defeat by tragic Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano who lost her fiancé a year ago to a brain tumor yet still came to Roland Garros 2011 and played in a losing effort.

“I know of her story, we all have stories,” said the American who had never before lost in the first round of a 46 previous majors. “I almost died (blood clots in 2011) and Venus is struggling herself (auto-immune disease).

“So, you know, it’s life, it just depends on how you deal with it. She obviously is dealing with it really well. Everybody, like Mardy Fish (heart palpitations), he’s even having trouble. Everybody has something that they’re dealing with. You’ve just got to deal with it.”

Williams called her defeat after saving six match points “disappointing, but it’s life.”

“Things could be a lot worse, nothing I can’t deal with. I’ve been through so much in my life. I’m not happy, by no means. I just always think things can be worse. I have to put it in perspective. My Roland Garros so happens to be over.”
