Budapest

Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) Sara Errani def. Alberta Brianti 6-4 6-0

This is finally enough to earn Sara Errani some points — although not enough to move her noticeably. If she can make the final, she is likely to reach the Top 25.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (5) Marina Erakovic def. Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-2 1-6 6-4

This should do it: Marina Erakovic is Top Forty. Probably #39. The bad news is, she is apparently injured.

Singles – Quarterfinal: Elena Vesnina def. (6) Petra Martic 6-3 6-2

Despite the seedings, this isn’t a huge surprise; Elena Vesnina is pretty definitely the better of these two players. But she’s now only one win away from the final — and finals are emphatically not her thing.

Singles – Quarterfinal: Anna Tatishvili def. Aleksandra Wozniak 5-7 7-6(7-4) 6-4

This leaves Aleksandra Wozniak still below #50.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Husarova/Rybarikova def. (2) Erakovic/Vesnina 3-4 retired (Erakovic: left abdominal injury)

Not the best sign, given that Erakovic and Vesnina are both in the singles semifinal. Against each other, even.

Doubles – Semifinal: Birnerova/Krajicek def. Begu/Minella 6-0 6-3

Estoril

Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) Roberta Vinci def. (7) Nadia Petrova 6-2 1-6 6-4

This is the sort of result that would never have happened until a year or two ago. Nadia Petrova will remain stuck below #30.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (6) Kaia Kanepi def. (4) Petra Cetkovska 6-3 3-6 6-3

Nadia Petrova’s loss in Kaia Kanepi’s gain. With Petrova out, Kanepi appears certain to hit the Top Thirty.

Singles – Quarterfinal: Carla Suarez Navarro def. Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-3 6-3

We show Carla Suarez Navarro at #51 in safe points. Make the final and she should be Top Fifty. And she faces an unseeded opponent.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (Q) Karin Knapp def. Galina Voskoboeva 7-6(7-4) 2-6 6-4

There was a time when Karin Knapp looked like a fairly promising player. Then she started having problems, and fell apart completely. Could this be a token that she is finally back? One more win would put her in the Top Hundred. She costs Galina Voskoboeva the chance to reach the Top Forty.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Panova/Watson def. Kops-Jones/Spears 6-4 6-1

Doubles – Semifinal: (3) Shvedova/Voskoboeva def. (2) Mirza/Rodionova 6-3 7-6(8-6)
