Fifth seed Bernard Tomic enjoyed a winning debut at the BMW Open on Monday in Munich, defeating Belgium’s Olivier Rochus 6-4, 6-3 in 68 minutes. The Australian served nine aces and broke serve three times from four opportunities to clinch his 15th victory of the season.
The 19-year-old Tomic opened his clay-court campaign with second-round exits at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters (l. to Dolgopolov) and the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell (l. to Montanes) in the past two weeks. Earlier in the season, on hard court, he reached the semi-finals at the Brisbane International (l. to Murray) and the fourth round of the Australian Open (l. to Federer).
The only other main draw singles match on Monday sees another Belgian, Steve Darcis, face Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo.
