Barcelona
Singles – Second Round: (2) Julia Goerges def. (WC) Garbine Muguruza Blanco 7-5 5-7 6-2
Another promising result for Garbine Muguruza Blanco, but she remains below #130.
Singles – Second Round: (3) Dominika Cibulkova def. Klara Zakopalova 5-7 6-4 6-4
A hard-fought win that does Dominika Cibulkova no good; she needs a title to move in the rankings. She leaves Klara Zakopalova still below #45.
Singles – Second Round: (Q) Yuliya Beygelzimer def. (5/WC) Flavia Pennetta 6-2 6-7(5-7) 6-4
Yulia Beygelzimer has been around for a very long time, but in more than a decade of WTA events, she had only eight wins and had never been past a second round. She had never beaten a Top Thirty player, either. Talk about a big day for her! She will rise from #204 to around #170.
Singles – Second Round: Olga Govortsova def. Laura Pous-Tio 7-6(7-4) 6-7(6-8) 6-2
We would never have guessed that Olga Govortsova would have the stamina for a match like this, which took more than three hours. She should rise to around #75.
Singles – Second Round: Sorana Cirstea def. Lourdes Dominguez Lino 1-6 6-3 6-1
What a day! Five singles matches, all three sets long (although this one took less than an hour and forty minutes), for a total of just about exactly twelve hours. If Sorana Cirstea can win one more match, she is likely to hit the Top Forty.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Errani/Vinci def. Halep/Husarova 6-3 6-1
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Cetkovska/Zahlavova Strycova def. (WC) Soler-Espinosa/Suarez Navarro 6-2 7-5
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Pennetta/Schiavone def. Peer/Suarez 6-1 3-6 10-8 (Match TB)
Paola Suarez will gain a few more ranking spots despite losing. It’s going to be interesting to see which other partners she pairs with this clay season.
Copenhagen
Singles – Second Round: (1) Caroline Wozniacki def. Pauline Parmentier 6-2 6-1
Ho-hum. It puts the fans in the stands, but this doesn’t earn any points for Caroline Wozniacki. She needs a title.
Singles – Second Round: (2) Angelique Kerber def. Anne Keothavong 4-6 6-3 6-3
Angelique Kerber could rise as high as #14 as a result of this. Her Top Fifteen spot looks sure.
Singles – Second Round: (3) Jelena Jankovic def. (WC) Yulia Putintseva 6-3 6-1
A much better match for Jelena Jankovic than her first, although still not enough points to matter. Even one more win, though, would gain her two ranking spots.
Singles – Second Round: Bojana Jovanovski def. (4) Monica Niculescu 6-7(6-8) 6-4 6-1
Even with this loss, Monica Niculescu will probably rise to #28. Bojana Jovanovski is now clearly back in the Top Hundred.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Arvidsson/Kanepi def. Barrois/Brianti 7-6(7-5) 6-4
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Cornet/Parmentier def. Foretz Gacon/Malek 6-3 6-3
