UCLA-bound and defending champion Kyle McPhillips survived a scare on Tuesday at the 45th annual Easter Bowl USTA Spring Nationals, outlasting last week’s ITF Carson girls’ 16s champion Jessica Ho of Wexford, Pa., 6-7 (4), 6-0, 6-3, in the second round of the girls’ 18s ITF division on Tuesday at Rancho Las Palmas Resort.
Also on Tuesday in the girls’ 18s, Rasheeda McAdoo of Boca Raton, Fla., the daughter of former Laker great Bob McAdoo defeated No. 14-seeded Julia Elbaba of Oyster Bay, N.Y., 6-4, 6-2, while No. 7-seeded Allie Kiick of Plantation, Fla., the daughter of former Miami Dolphins star Jim Kiick, beat Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum of Ojai, Calif., 6-2, 6-0, both in the second round.
Last year’s girls’ 16s Easter Bowl champion Caroline Doyle pulled off a big upset beating 2011 18s finalist and No. 4 seeded Gabby Andrews of Pomona, Calif., 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the third round. Andrews was the 14s Easter Bowl champion two years ago.
Going into the match, Doyle knew she had to stay aggressive to have any success against Andrews.
“I tried to keep stepping up and attacking and not be on the defense because I knew she would attack a lot,” Doyle said. “Gabby is a very tough competitor. She’s solid all around and doesn’t have an apparent weakness, and she’s crafty with her hands as well.”
The 16-year-old Doyle, who lives in San Francisco but trains at the USTA facility in Boca Raton, Fla., credits her solid play to her recent improvements she’s made in her game. “I’ve been working on trying to step up more and developing my serve and turning that into a weapon, because in the past my opponents have taken advantage specifically on my second serve,” Doyle said.
Doyle says the Easter Bowl is one of her favorite tournaments of the year.
“I really like the people and it’s fun getting to see all my national friends here and the facility is really great,” Doyle said. “I’ve really enjoyed the Easter Bowl and a couple of the tournaments I’ve played in South America.”
In the upset of the day, unseeded Mary Haffey of Naples, Fla., eliminated top-seeded Shannon Hudson of Virginia Beach, Va., 6-2, 6-2, in the girls’ 16s.
The boys’ 18s began play on Tuesday with top seeded Mitchell Krueger of Aledo, Texas, and No. 2 Noah Rubin of Rockville Centre, N.Y., both moving on with straight-set wins.
In the girls’ 18s, No. 3 seed Chalena Scholl moved on with a straight-set 6-3, 6-4 victory over Katerina Stewart. After falling behind 4-2 in the second set, Scholl responded by winning four consecutive games to seal the victory.
“I was proud of myself for the way I came back and felt I played pretty good all day,” Scholl said. “After being down I started putting the ball in play and hit the ball deeper and controlled the points more.”
The 16-year-old looks up to her older sister, 19-year-old Chichi Scholl, who’s played in qualifying at both the U.S. Open and Australian Open and is currently ranked in the top 200 in the WTA rankings.
“It’s definitely extra motivation for me having Chichi playing professionally because that’s where I want to be in the future,” Scholl said. “She gives me daily advice on tennis and how to stay mentally tough and that’s a big help for me.”
In the girls’ 16s, No. 4 seed Alex Chatt of Western Springs, Ill., moved on to the third round with a 6-3, 7-6 (2) victory over Victoria Robertson of San Diego.
Chatt was relieved to win the second set tiebreak. “It was a grinding match, survival of the fittest,” she said. “It was really hot and I didn’t want to split and play a third set in the 90-degree heat, so that definitely motivated me.”
The 15-year-old Chatt credits her success to her diligent training and diet. She began using a nutrition journal two months ago and says it’s helped her significantly.
“I hit four to five hours a day and do lots of endurance training like sprints and running miles and miles,” Chatt said. “I eat a lot of carbohydrates and protein and stay away from ice cream and sweets.”
Chatt admits the diet can be tough but says she does it for the love of the game. “I’ve been on it for a couple months and use a protein supplement during my matches that helps replenish all my minerals and that’s really made a big difference,” she said.
In the boys’ 16s, No. 4 seed Henrik Wiersholm of Kirkland, Wash., advanced to the third round with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Drew Dawson of Irvine, Calif. After winning the first set, Wiersholm felt he let his emotions get the best of him in the second set.
“I got a little bit emotional and negative and he capitalized and won a couple breaks,” Wiersholm said.
He settled down, broke early in the third set and won the match. Wiersholm, 15, says he enjoys the challenging nature of tennis but says his ultra competitive attitude can be both good and bad.
“I like the problem-solving aspect and I do like that competition of winning and losing,” Wiersholm said. “But I also have a tough time with it for the same reason that I love competition. When I’m down it can get in my head.”
The No. 4 seed also likes traveling to multiple tournaments throughout the season.
“I enjoy the opportunities to do better and improve each week,” Wiersholm said. “I think that’s what’s great about tennis, it’s a year-round sport and the farther you go in each tournament the more challenging the matches are.”
