Daily Women Update - Results (Barcelona and Copenhagen ) and Rankings

Petra Cetkovska of Czech Republic hits a return in her women's second round match against Mona Barthel of Germany at the Australian Open Grand Slam tennis tournament in Melbourne, Australia, 18 January 2012. EPA/HOW HWEE YOUNG  |

Barcelona

It wasn’t exactly a big name list of qualifiers. The cutoff for direct entry here was below #100, and even so, the top two qualifying seeds couldn’t make the final. In fact, only one qualifying seed — #3 Aravane Rezai — made the main draw. The other qualifiers are Laura Thorpe, Yuliya Beygelzimer, and Annalisa Bona (about whom we know absolutely nothing).

Singles – First Round: (4) Roberta Vinci def. Mathilde Johansson 1-6 6-1 6-1

Even if Roberta Vinci can play better than she did in the first set of this match, she’ll have a hard time moving in the rankings here; she has a rather large sixteenth even score and the gap between #17 and Vinci’s #18 is substantial.

Singles – First Round: (6) Petra Cetkovska def. Shahar Peer 6-1 5-7 7-5

Petra Cetkovska was defending fairly big Challenger points. But she looks certain to stay Top Thirty.

Singles – First Round: (7) Sara Errani def. Irina-Camelia Begu 7-6(7-5) 6-4

Irina-Camelia Begu just fell out of the Top Fifty, and this means she won’t be making it back in. For Sara Errani, the points don’t count yet.

Singles – First Round: Simona Halep def. Sloane Stephens 6-4 6-4

Simona Halep matches her sixteenth event score. If she can win any more matches, she could climb significantly.

Singles – First Round: (WC) Garbine Muguruza Blanco def. (WC) Arantxa Parra Santonja 6-3 6-3

A nice follow-up to Garbine Muguruza Blanco’s Miami result. We’d guess this will take her above #140.

Doubles – First Round: Pennetta/Schiavone def. Cirstea/Zakopalova 7-5 4-6 10-6 (Match TB)

Doubles – First Round: Begu/Dominguez Lino def. Bogdan/Cadantu 5-7 6-3 10-6 (Match TB)

Doubles – First Round: (WC) Soler-Espinosa/Suarez Navarro def. (WC) Cabeza Candela/Ferrer Suarez 3-6 6-1 10-2 (Match TB)

Copenhagen

Barcelona featured mostly small names in qualifying. Copenhagen, by contrast, had an amazingly big one. Anna Chakvetadze was in the draw — unseeded. At least she was able to take advantage, upsetting top qualifying seed Lesia Tsurenko 5-7 6-4 6-2. #2 qualifying seed Melinda Czink managed to qualify, but the other two qualifiers, Annika Beck and Johanna Konta, were unseeded.

Singles – First Round: Alberta Brianti def. Kristina Barrois 6-2 3-6 6-4

Kristina Barrois remains stuck below #100.

Singles – First Round: Timea Babos def. Kimiko Date-Krumm 1-6 7-6(7-4) 7-5

This won’t put Timea Babos in the Top Fifty, but it looks as if it could happen soon.

Singles – First Round: (WC) Yulia Putintseva def. (WC) Karen Barbat 6-4 7-5

Both players in this match are wildcards, but Yulia Putintseva — although incredibly inconsistent — has had some pretty good Challenger results. This is no surprise.

Doubles – First Round: Cornet/Parmentier def. (1) Groenefeld/Martic 6-4 6-3

Doubles – First Round: (2) Rodionova/Rodionova def. Marosi/Woerle 6-2 2-6 11-9 (Match TB)

Doubles – First Round: Arvidsson/Kanepi def. Abramovic/Jeflea 6-4 6-2

Doubles – First Round: Dekmeijere/Kondratieva def. Keothavong/Savinykh 0-6 6-4 11-9 (Match TB)

Doubles – First Round: Larsson/Woehr def. (WC) Ejdesgaard/Wozniacki 6-2 6-4

It seems pretty safe to say that Denmark won’t be winning any Olympic medals in doubles….
