Like any sport, tennis is difficult, if not impossible, to be on top in every aspect of the game. As hard of a task as it is to master every facet of a game, Federer is the one player who most nearly embodies this concept. Whether you stack him up to the other top players on grass, hard-court, or clay, Federer’s game consistently overcomes anything that’s put in the way of victory. His hitting style is unique to other top players’, such as Rafael Nadal’s, in that it is so fluid and he comes up with big shots in almost all the key points. A game like Federer’s is built to last. The fluidity of his motion for both forehands and backhands keeps excess strain off his body. In a game where the average retiring age is between 30 and 35, Federer is capable of maintaining a quickness and aptitude in his game that is virtually unmatched even as he enters his 30’s.
Roger has established himself as one of the best players of all time by holding his ranking as number 1 for a record 237 weeks straight. Although he no longer holds this ranking, he continues to dominate on tour with his smooth form and quick speed. As he gets older he is obviously slowing down, but his hand-eye coordination is still unparalleled. He can still not only compete with, but actually win against the rising players who are in their early and mid 20’s.
Unlike his rival, Nadal, Federer manages a very controlled style of game play. Where Nadal is very explosive with his game, Federer finesses his way to victory. It is surprising to see Nadal able to maintain his style of play for so many years without extensive injuries. Feder’s game is more suited for the lifespan of his tennis career, preventing excessive stress on his body and enabling him to avoid time off.
For years Federer dominated the world of tennis on every surface, but in the past few years his rivals Nadal and Djokovic have been catching up and surpassing his abilities on clay and hard-court, respectively. Federer first had complications with his successive Grand Slam victories facing Nadal in the French Open, then Djokovic established himself as a top player, specifically proving his capabilities as a hard-court rival for Federer. The fact that Federer has different rivals for each surface type proves that no other player can compete with him on every level. His versatility is matched by none, making him one of the top players of all time.
