Singles – Final: Sofia Arvidsson def. (4) Marina Erakovic 6-3 6-4

Memphis Magic continues for Sofia Arvidsson. She said it herself: “I just love this place. It’s my second home.”

Of course, facing an opponent who had first-time jitters might have helped. Marina Erakovic won the first two games of the match, then collapsed. The second set was closer, obviously, but in the end, Erakovic couldn’t stand the pressure.

And so Arvidsson wins her second career title — both of them at Memphis, the first having come all the way back in 2006. One of her two other finals was also here. According to the WTA, she has won twice as many matches here as at any other tournament.

Naturally she gets a big rankings boost. #72 coming in, it appears she will rise to #55.

It was a bittersweet occasion. The son of a member of her entourage just had his godson die of cancer. She dedicated the win to him.

Despite losing, Marina Erakovic can look forward to a career high. We show her at #48. And she can boast of a WTA final. Now she just needs to reach a final where her opponent doesn’t own the place….

Doubles – Final: (1) Hlavackova/Hradecka def. (2) Dushevina/Govortsova 6-3 6-4

It took a while for Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka to adjust to being Roland Garros champions. They didn’t win another title for the rest of 2011. But they’ve definitely changed that in 2012. They already have two titles, Auckland and Memphis. That’s two different surfaces, too, plus they won Roland Garros on clay. They could well be Top Ten for most of the time until Roland Garros. Now they just need to find a way to win a grass title….
