Singles – First Round: M Russell def. (7) D Young 6-1 7-6(8-6)

This must have been a scramble-fest. Donald Young would have all but clinched his Top Forty spot had he won; as it is, it’s going to be a very close thing.

Singles – First Round: G Muller def. T Smyczek (Q) 2-6 7-6(7-5) 6-3

Tim Smyczek loves playing in California, but once Gilles Muller got his serve working (which took a set and then some), it was pretty much over.

Singles – First Round: D Kutrovsky (Q) def. D Lajola (Q) 6-7(7-9) 6-3 7-6(7-3)

This lasted two hours and five minutes. Which is two hours and five minutes longer than either guy had ever spent playing an ATP match. Dimitar Kutrovsky came in ranked #438 and increases his points by more than a third; Dennis Lajola was #719, and just qualifying increases his points by about 50%.

The rule for the day seemed to be, if it involved a qualifier, it took forever. They had all the early matches; the night session would be quick.

Steve Johnson will remain below #350.

Singles – First Round: (WC) R Ginepri def. X Malisse 6-1 6-2

The predictions about Robby Ginepri’s comeback are looking fairly solid. To be sure, Xavier Malisse seems to be fading badly.

Doubles – First Round: (2) Lipsky/R Ram def. Benneteau/Monfils 6-3 7-6(8-6)

Doubles – First Round: Anderson/Moser def. Dlouhy/Zelenay 6-2 6-3

More struggles for Lukas Dlouhy. Makes you wonder how much longer he’ll be able to find partners….
