Start with an explanation: All the rankings estimates in our Preview were wrong. The ATP took off Rotterdam and the related events last week. This week, Memphis comes off. We did not know this, and it threw our calculations out the window. We sure hope we get this week’s rankings right… calculating rankings when there is a mixture of 500 point and 250 point events is tricky.
Singles – First Round: (Q) P Mathieu def. (4) F Lopez 4-6 7-6(7-5) 6-4
Feliciano Lopez can’t blame this on tiredness; he skipped Davis Cup. It appears Paul-Henri Mathieu really is back. Or at least getting closer. He more than quadruples his points, and will rise from #733 to probably just below #400. And it looks as if he will go higher. Feliciano Lopez wasn’t defending anything, but will fall a spot even so.
Singles – First Round: (5) R Gasquet def. F Cipolla 6-3 1-6 6-1
With this, Richard Gasquet will pass Lopez. But he was pretty lucky here — Cipolla suffered a leg injury in this match.
Singles – First Round: L Kubot def. (6) A Dolgopolov 6-7(4-7) 6-4 6-2
It doesn’t appear Alexandr Dolgopolov will lose any ground here — indeed, he might gain a spot — but he loses any chance he had to make the Top Fifteen.
Singles – First Round: (WC) J Huta Galung def. I Ljubicic 7-6(8-6) 6-3
Ivan Ljubicic missed Davis Cup, but skipping obviously didn’t help him. He will remain below #40.
