Rafael Nadal has decided he is happier to be just a football fan rather than somebody with a financial interest in a team. So the world no.2 and his uncle Miguel Angel Nadal sold their 10% shareholding in Spanish La Liga club Real Mallorca.
Nadal, a committed supporter of Real Madrid, purchased the shares last year when his uncle, who starred internationally for Spain and played club football for both Barcelona and Real Mallorca, became assistant coach at the club.
The Nadal family moved in because the club had hit financial problems but have opted to sell their shares to German businessman Utz Claassen who wanted to increase his stake holding to 20%. The team, which currently lies 14th in La Liga and is currently in financial administration.
Miguel Angel Nadal’s stay on the coaching staff was cut short after head coach Michael Laudrup resigned in September. When the Dane quit Rafa’s uncle openly criticized the board’s handling of the matter and later decided to leave himself after numerous disagreements.
Real Mallorca, now coached by Joaquin Caparros, is in financial administration, lie 14th in La Liga.
