Many thought that national icon Goran Ivanisevic was a certainty to succeed Goran Prpic as Davis Cup captain after Prpic unexpectedly quit as captain of both the Croatian Davis and Fed Cup teams in November.
However, in these cash-strapped times the tennis federation has decided that it cannot agree to bend to the former Wimbledon champion’s request for a reported $130,600 for a one-year deal.
Instead, Ivanisevic will take an unpaid one-time role as captain for the first round tie against Japan, which takes place February 10th to 12th, while the federation considers other options.
