Rafael Nadal is painting a picture of eager determination as the former No. 1 makes his return to tennis after more than a month away. The Spaniard has told local media that he expects to be a threat in the ATP World Tour Finals starting Sunday in London as well as the Davis Cup final against Argentina from December 2.

While Spain is favored on clay in Seville, Nadal is quietly confident of his country’s chances. Nadal missed the 2008 Davis final in Mar del Plata which Spain won over the South Americans, as he was carrying a knee tendinitis problem.

The player who has lost seven ATP finals this season still puts a positive spin on the year. His last match was a third set ouster in Shanghai against German Florian Mayer. “The year is done and it’s been good. I finished second in the world won a Grand Slam and playing three Grand Slam finals.

“That’s very positive. I am not so arrogant as to think that with these results is not a good season.” Nadal skipped last week’s Masters in Paris, won by Roger Federer, to rest and recuperate. “By skipping Paris, I feel mentally and physically good.”
