Far-sighted Roger Federer is looking ahead to 2012, with his decision on whether to play the Dubai ATP event determining his Davis Cup first-round plans against the US in Switzerland.

It’s a busy February which the most delicate point of the early season, with the Davis Cup tie and Rotterdam indoors also in his calendar. “I’ll see what happens after the Davis Cup, that might have an impact,” said Federer,

“I’ve already said yes for Qatar (early January) and Rotterdam (February). I’m talking with Dubai (where he trains) to see whether I’m going to play there as well, and then there will be Davis Cup.”

Federer said he will decide and announce within a fortnight if he plans to play Davis Cup, with indications hinting that the answer will be yes. “It will be announced as soon as I will make a decision for Dubai.”

The No. 4 won Basel last week for the fifth time after taking six weeks off to cure minor physical problems which included a just-revealed wrist injury. “I hurt myself playing against (Jo-Wilfried) Tsonga (US Open quarter-finals), and in Australia (Davis Cup) also I hurt myself. It was the thigh, and I had something new with my ankle.

“They were all little things, nothing very serious except maybe my wrist. It scared me because it’s dangerous there. But I just needed two or three weeks, so that seemed normal not to go to Asia at all (in October).”
