Days Off, Shanghai Thoughts, Roger Federer Secrets... - Shubert Blog

G’day mate! It was another picturesque day of sunshine here in Southern California but I didn’t take advantage of it. Instead, I put my rackets aside today, relaxed, stretched, and did some light lower body and core work in the gym in the evening. To be completely honest, my gluts and lower back were so sore from my ply-o workout yesterday that I’m kind of grateful I didn’t train today! Definitely using the extra energy I had today to really take care of my body and nutrition. I also had some time to catch up on the Shanghai matches I missed last night. I stand corrected from my previous conceptions about audience attendance as I actually saw possibly 300 people filling the stadium seating (Oh my goodness! hahaha) Every single match I’ve watched, a player has either thrown his racket, cursed, screamed, and had a running conversation with himself. Roddick and Fish were exceptional models for this behavior along with Lopez, Tipsarevic, and Nalbandian… Growing trend considering the year is almost over and everyone is burnt out. Worthy of some sympathies but considering it’s a masters 1000 event, shouldn’t these guys be so eager to make a run to garner all those points?!? I’m stuck here at 1 point looking at Djokovic with over 13,000 wondering how in the world… Nevermind. On to Fed!

What does Roger Federer do to keep his body in top shape while maintaining a good strength and flexibility? He’s not super human, does he take days off? What do those off days consist of? Does he take epsom salt baths, ice baths? I’m 100% sure he gets massages whenever he desires.. There’s no secret formula for success, but are there different ways to stretch, different methods of stop/start running drills and etc that train his body to be supreme right? It’s just a matter of learning these secrets, deviating from what everyone else is killing themselves trying to do better, and finding your own balance or routine of sorts. Does anyone in the world have an answer for any of these questions besides Fed and his secretive camp? I think the answer is no. Thus the greatest secret in all of tennis is discovered.. I’ve even heard from friends who’ve traveled to Dubai to train with Fed through IMG and they say when the hitting is over, they are ushered out of there in a secret service type of manner which leaves Fed and his trainers/physios to do their personal stuff in complete secrecy. Nobody is allowed to observe what they do! Remember, Fed never sweats or seems out of breath on the court – What the hell?!? Rog may fool everyone into thinking he’s just a supremely talented individual who shows up to tournaments, casually warms up, then beats everyone on the planet, but I know for sure he’s a conglomerate who spends a fortune every year to take care of his body. Dolgopolov is known to go rock climbing and engage in bizarre unrelated workouts to tennis, courtesy of his coach who is a former “free-spirit, and free thinker”. Maybe Fed spends his time training for tennis by going in an alter-G gravity chamber deep underground to maximize muscle output while wearing a sweatsuit to keep him thin and lithe. Just an idea, but just think about the things you can come up with when you have a couple hundred million dollars in the bank, I certainly have a million ideas if you’re willing to listen! Go out and try to find a video or article about Fed’s training regimen, bet you won’t find one!

Always trying to improve,

Shubert
