Andy Murray’s Mighty Win Over Nadal in Tokyo
British No. 1 Andy Murray overcame Rafael Nadal today 3-6 6-2 6-0 to claim the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships 2011 title.
Murray got off to a slow start in today’s final losing his opening service game to Nadal. After losing the first set Murray dominated the match, which turned around when Murray broke the Spaniard’s serve in the fourth game in the second set.
In the third set the Mighty Murray was unstoppable and he even said after the match it was one of the best sets he has ever played against Nadal. “I played some great tennis, especially in the third set. There was a lot of close games towards the end of the first set and beginning of the second and I managed to get the momentum and didn’t give him many chances after that,” the world number four said.
The Brit won the PTT Thailand Open last week in Bangkok defeating American Donald Young in the final. His goal this year is to finish Top 3 ahead of Roger Federer. Murray said, “I need to keep u the wins and hopefully I’ll get to the No. 3 ranking. It’s not the ultimate goal, but it’s the target I set for the last few tournaments this year.”
The defending Japan Open Rafael Nadal failed to win his 66th career title today. Both Nadal and Murray have already qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London in November. Nadal has won against Murray in three out four Grand Slam semi-finals this year, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open.
Andy will have a short rest after his final win against Nadal and then he will be heading out on court again with his brother Jamie to play in the doubles finals. The Murray brothers will face the number four seeds Frantisek Germak and Filip Polasek.
