AN INJURY UPDATE FROM ALEKSANDRA WOZNIAK

Montreal, September 27, 2011 – Tennis Canada has received its first news news concerning the health of

Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC). Wozniak returned to Montreal on Sunday night and met with a specialist on

Monday to learn the exact nature of the eye injury she suffered during her semifinal match at the Albuquerque

Challenger in New Mexico on Saturday.

Test results show that Wozniak is experiencing hemorrhaging in the back of her eye near the retina. Her vision

has improved significantly since the weekend as she was unable to open her eye on Saturday when she suffered

the injury. Wozniak will not require surgery, but her recovery needs to be followed closely by an opthamologist

before she can return to competition. She has withdrawn from Challenger events in Las Vegas, Kansas City and

Troy and hopes to play a few WTA events in Europe during the month of October before season’s end.

“It was an unfortunate accident. I hope my eye heals quickly so that I can get back on the court as soon as

possible and be able to play the WTA events in Europe before the end of the season,” Wozniak said this morning.

Junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup

The Junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup finals are being held this week in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Canada will be

well-represented as both the boys and girls teams will be competing in the event which brings together the Top 16

U16 teams in the world. Canada’s Junior Davis Cup squad made up of Hugo Di Feo (Montreal, QC), Filip Obucina

(Etobicoke, ON) and Brayden Schnur (Pickering, ON) is seeded eighth. On Tuesday, they will play their first tie

against Germany. Canada’s Junior Fed Cup team is represented by Francoise Abanda (Montreal, QC), Erin

Routliffe (Caledon, ON) and Carol Zhao (Richmond Hill, ON). They are seeded second and will face the Chinese

Taipei in their opening tie. The event runs until Sunday October 2.

Montréal, le 27 septembre 2011 – Tennis Canada a reçu les premières nouvelles sur l’état de santé

d’Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC). En effet, Wozniak est revenue en ville dimanche soir afin de rencontrer un

spécialiste et faire quelques examens pour connaître la nature exacte de sa blessure à l’œil survenue samedi

alors qu’elle jouait son match de demi-finale au Challenger d’Albuquerque, au Nouveau-Mexique.

Les résultats ont démontré que la Blainvilloise souffrait d’une hémorragie au fond de l’œil, près de la rétine. Sa

vision s’est toutefois beaucoup améliorée depuis le week-end, elle qui n’arrivait même pas à ouvrir son œil

samedi dernier. Wozniak n’aura pas besoin de chirurgie mais devra être suivie de près par un ophtalmologiste

avant de pouvoir reprendre la compétition. Pour l’instant, elle a dû se retirer des Challengers de Las Vegas,

Kansas City et Troy. Elle espère tout de même être en mesure de jouer quelques tournois du WTA en Europe, au

mois d’octobre.

« C’était un accident malheureux. J’espère que mon œil guérira très vite car je souhaite retourner sur le terrain le

plus rapidement possible et ainsi pouvoir jouer quelques tournois en Europe avant la fin de la saison, » affirmait

Wozniak ce matin.

Coupe Davis et Coupe Fédération junior

C’est cette semaine qu’a lieu la Coupe Davis et la Coupe Fédération junior à San Luis Potosi, au Mexique. Le

Canada sera bien représenté puisque l’équipe masculine et féminine avait réussi à se qualifier pour cette grande

finale qui réunit les 16 meilleurs pays au monde. Les jeunes qui participent à cette compétition doivent être âgés

de 16 ans ou moins. Chez les garçons, l’équipe canadienne qui est classée 8e tête de série est composée d’Hugo

Di Feo (Montréal, QC), Filip Obucina (Etobicoke, ON) et Brayden Schnur (Pickering, ON). Ils affrontent

aujourd’hui l’Allemagne dans leur première rencontre de la semaine. Du côté des filles, Francoise Abanda

(Montréal, QC), Erin Routliffe (Caledon, ON), et Carol Zhao (Richmond Hill, ON) représenteront le Canada, elles

qui ont été établies 2e tête de série. Elles croiseront aujourd’hui le fer avec la Taïwan. La compétition se terminera

dimanche, le 2 octobre.
