Florian Mayer captures first career title in Bucharest
Florian Mayer of Germany won his maiden title at the BDR Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest on Sunday. Despite suffering from nerves Mayer brushed Spain’s Pablo Andujar aside 6-3 6-1.
The 27-year-old has been in four finals but has never managed to clinch a title. Mayer admitted to being nervous and finding it hard to sleep the night before the final. “I wanted to win so badly,” the Bucharest Champion said.
Andujar said he was happy with the way he played this week in Bucharest, “I don’t have anything to say about today’s final, only that he played a great match and hit a lot of winners. I feel happy because I put in a good effort and played well yesterday.”
Mayer received a winner’s cheque of €67 650 and 250 ATP Ranking Points.
The Italian duo of Daniele Bracciali and Potito Starace defeated the number four seeds Julian Knowle of Austria and David Marrero of Spain 3-6 6-4 10-8 in the Bucharest doubles final on Saturday.
The Bucharest title was the Italian team’s second title. Bracciali has won three titles this year with three different partners. Starace said he was a little tired after Davis Cup and wanted to pull out but decided last minute to play the tournament, he said, “Even if I’m more of a singles player winning a title is always a beautiful experience.
