Chela ousted by Andujar – Mayer reaches final in Bucharest

Top seed Juan Ignacio Chela suffered a loss in today’s semi-finals at the BDR Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest to Spain’s Pablo Andujar. The Spaniard won in straight sets 6-4 7-5.

World No. 43 Andujar is looking to win his second title this season. He won the Casablanca title earlier in the year. Andujar was also the runner up at this year’s Stuttgart tournament. “I played a good match today, playing well during the important points. I’m looking forward to the final. I’ve been feeling very well during the whole week, playing good matches,” Andujar said.

This week Andujar is ranked a career best No. 43. He will face Germany’s Florian Mayer in tomorrow’s final. “Mayer has more experience than me. But last year was my first final here and I became a more mature player in the meantime.”

Florian Mayer took out Italian Filippo Volandri 7-6 (3) 6-2 to advance into the Bucharest final. Mayer is looking for his first ATP Tour career title this week. He has been a career runner up four times, the latest final spot came in Munich this year when he lost to Nikolay Davydenko in the final.

It took Mayer 56 minutes to win the first set in a tiebreaker. The German was broken early in the second set, Mayer came straight back winning three consecutive games and took the lead 3-1 and there was no stopping the World No. 24 from there. Mayer said, “I have to play at a high level like I did today to have a chance to win.”

Italian duo of Daniele Bracciali and Potito Starace won the doubles title today in Bucharest. They ousted Julian Knowle of Austria and David Marrero of Spain 3-6 6-4 10-8. This is the Italian’s second team title. Starace said, “Today the match turned in our way because of two points. Even if I’m more of a singles player winning a title is always a beautiful experience. He also added, “I arrived here tired after the Davis Cup I Chile. But I didn’t want to withdraw because of my partner and since I thought we had a chance to win our first round I tried my best and it worked.”

Daniele Bracciali has now won three titles this season with three different partners.

Tomorrow’s singles final will commence at 3.00pm local time.
