Aussies Around the Globe – Unreal win for Grand S(l)am

Samantha Stosur of Australia holds the championship trophy after defeating Serena Williams of the US to win the women's final match on the fourteenth day of the 2011 US Open Tennis Championship at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York, USA 11 September 2011. It was a big day for Australian tennis yesterday when Samantha Stosur crushed Serena Williams 6-2 6-3. Sammy is the first woman to win the US Open since Margaret Court back in 1973. The last time an Aussie male or female won the tournament was 10 years ago when Lleyton Hewitt lifted the trophy.

Stosur remembers watching Pat Rafter play the US Open and asking her parents to let her have a day off school so she could stay at home and watch. Sammy and Rafter are now both US Open Champions. The No. 9 seed played an unbelievable match yesterday on Arthur Ashe Stadium against 13 times Grand Slam Champion Serena Williams.

“I’ve played matches where I feel like I played lights out, can’t miss a ball and it’s fantastic, but to do it under these circumstances in this kind of final against a player like Serena, for sure I’m gonna think it’s one of the best days of my career,” the newly crowned US Open Champ said.

Despite Serena’s behaviour she complimented the Australian’s game in the final, “She was cracking them today. She definitely hit hard and just went for broke. I think sometimes a lot of people were putting me as the favourite, and I definitely was trying not to put myself as the favourite. I was like, it’s anyone’s game, as you can see as a result today.”

The Australian number one player reached the final of the French Open last year and lost to Italy’s Francesca Schiavone. After the French Open Sam has been having a few problems winning matches. This year she got to the third round at Australian Open, third round at French Open and she suffered a surprise loss at Wimbledon in the first round to a much lower ranked player.

But she remained positive throughout, “At the end of the day, I had to believe that I as going to feel like I could play my best tennis again, and I think to realise that it’s not all gone. You’ve just got to get over that mental hurdle and those battles in your own head during matches that things aren’t going too well. It takes time. It’s probably all things I already knew, but for someone to talk about it maybe in a different way, say it in a different way, makes you realise things.”

After yesterday’s final Sam Stosur knows she belongs at the top of the woman’s game, “For sure it will just reinstate that belief and confidence in myself. Hopefully this is the first day of a new beginning for me, I guess, as a player.”
