Melzer/Petzschner and Fyrstenberg/Matkowski- US Open Final  |

This year’s doubles event at US Open has seen the top teams go out early. The Bryan Brothers suffered a first round surprise loss to Ivo Karlovic of Croatia and Frank Moser of Germany. The number two seeds Max Mirnyi of Belarus and Daniel Nestor of Canada lost in the second round to British duo Colin Flemming and Ross Hutchins. The Unseeded Italian team Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini took out Wimbledon finalists Horia Tecau of Romania and Robert Lindstedt of Sweden in the quarterfinals.

Jurgen Melzer of Austria and Philipp Petzschner of Germany are through to the doubles final after a three set win over Bolelli and Fognini 6-4 6-7 (3) 6-1. The number nine seeds have won two titles the first in Rotterdam and the second in Stuttgart this year. The German/Austrian team reached the quarterfinals of both the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year. Their least successful Grand Slam was French Open where they lost in the first round.

Their opponents in the final will be the Polish team of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski. The number six seeds overcame the Indo/Pak Express Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi in straight sets 6-2 7-6 (4). Bopanna and Qureshi were runners up at US Open last year.  The Polish team reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open but lost in the first round at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon this year. The Poles had an impressive win this week over the No. 4 seeds Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi in the quarterfinals.

Fyrstenberg and Matkowski have won eleven career doubles titles together. They won the Sopot tournament in July.

Melzer and Petzschner are ranked No. 8 on the ATP Tour Doubles Team Ranking and Fyrstenberg/Matkowski sit at No. 12.
