Trying To Advance Into Quarterfinal At The Open

The result of yesterday’s cancellation of play is a full day of matches throughout the grounds today, weather permitting. The men will try to complete fourth-round action with three Americans—in this case John Isner, Andy Roddick and Donald Young—attempting to move into the quarterfinals for the first time since 2003, though all three will be underdogs today. For Isner and Young, the only wild card remaining in either draw, a victory would mean a first-ever appearance in a Grand Slam quarterfinal, while Roddick is attempting to move into the US Open quarterfinals for the eighth time in his career. In men’s quarterfinal action today, Novak Djokovic takes on fellow Serb Janko Tipsarevic and Roger Federer faces Jo-Wilfried Tsonga—who upset Federer in the same round at Wimbledon—with the possibility of the two champions meeting each other in the US Open semifinals for a record fourth straight year.

On the women’s side, Serena Williams looks to continue her domination against seeds when she plays former US Open girls’ singles champion Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. A victory would extend Serena’s summer winning streak on hard courts to 17 and, in the process, she would become one of the lowest seeds to reach the US Open semifinals in the Open Era. Also, Samantha Stosur is back on court hoping for a slightly shorter victory against No. 2 seed and 2010 finalist Vera Zvonareva, Angelique Kerber aims to become just the 10th unseeded player to reach the women’s semifinals in the Open Era when she takes on Flavia Pennetta, and top seed Caroline Wozniacki attempts to advance to the US Open semifinals for a third straight year against Andrea Petkovic.
