World number one Novak Djokovic advanced into the quarterfinals of the US Open today with a straight set win over Alexandr Dolgopolov of the Ukraine.

Novak Djokovic played on Louis Armstrong arena today to give the ground pass holders a chance to see the amazing player without having to buy a ticket for Arthur Ashe Stadium. The court was at full capacity with a line that went around Flushing Meadow to get in.

The first set was concluded in a 30 minutes long tiebreaker, which was won by Djokovic 16-14. The two players have never played each other before and with Dolgopolov being a dark horse with a funky game Djokovic had to be at his best today.

After the first set, it was a kind of a turning point. I was confused on court in the frist set with the win and the low balls he was hitting. I raised my level in the next two sets. He’s an unpredictable player. He feeds on the energy of the crowd. The bigger the match is, he feels better, gets motivated, “ the world number one said

Djokovic broke in the opening game of the second set. The Serb didn’t let Dolgopolv back into the match again after that. The second set ended 6-4. In the third set Djokovic broke again early and he closed the set 6-2 and the match in 2 hours and 26 minutes.

The Wimbledon Champion said, “Dolgopolov has very fast hands and has a good running forehand and can serve well. I knew in the back of my mind I knew to hang in there and wait for the opportunities. After the first set I knew I had a little bit of a mental edge over him. Mental strength you get over the years by playing on the tour and getting that experience throughout the years.”

In the next round Djokovic will face his good friend and Davis Cup team mate Janko Tipsarevic. The two have played each other twice before and Djokovic has won both times. Tipsarevic took out former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero in four sets today 7-5 6-7 (3) 7-5 6-2.

“It’s great for our country. Janko is one of my great friends outside of tennis and it’s not going to be easy to play him. But it’s the quarterfinals of a major, I’ll come to win,” Djokovic said.
