AMERICAN MEN OUT IN FORCE IN THE ROUND OF 16

Mardy Fish today will be the first of four American men—the others are John Isner, Andy Roddick and Donald Young, all of whom won yesterday—to play his fourth-round match. The four U.S. players are the most American men into the round of 16 at the US Open since 2003. That year Roddick, Andre Agassi, Taylor Dent and Todd Martin all advanced.

Moreover, a win by Fish today would make him the first American man to reach the quarterfinals here since 2008, when both he and Roddick advanced. And the four potential Americans into this year’s quarterfinals would be the most since 1995, when Agassi, Michael Chang, Jim Courier, Patrick McEnroe and Pete Sampras all advanced to the elite eight.

FISH CRUISING, BUT SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE VS. TSONGA

Mardy Fish and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga enter today’s match against each other as two of just four men’s players who have yet to drop a set at this year’s tournament, joined only by No. 1 Novak Djokovic and No. 2 Rafael Nadal.

SERENA CRUISES INTO FOURTH-ROUND MATCHUP

Even with a stern test in the second set of her third-round match against No. 4 seed Victoria Azarenka, Serena Williams is among the most dominant performers thus far in the women’s draw. Through the first three rounds, she has dropped just 10 games in six sets, and her average of 1.67 games lost per set is tied for the least of any woman in advancing to the fourth round.
