Davis Cup – Greg Rusedski: ‘Britain Will Reach The Final'; ‘Australia Should Go For Groth'; ‘Evans Needs To Work His Backside Off’
Former British Davis Cup player Greg Rusedski says that Great Britain will go on from their 1-1 overnight scoreline to reach the final of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas for the first time in 37 years.
In a guest appearance on The Tennis Podcast, Rusedski (a pundit for British Eurosport) told presenters David Law and Catherine Whitaker that Andy Murray is looking better than ever, will play in Saturday’s doubles and will carry Britain to victory on Sunday.

“Jamie and Andy will play and win the doubles, and Andy will win on Sunday – no-one is beating Andy in singles in this tie,” said Rusedski. “Australia would need Novak Djokovic to stand a chance against him. So GB will be in the finals, probably against Belgium. The most impressive thing about Andy Murray was how controlled & focussed he was against Thanasi Kokkinakis. He was nothing like his US Open match against Kevin Anderson. Andy knows he probably has to win 3 matches to be in the Davis Cup final & that’s why it was so great he didn’t waste any energy today.’
Rusedski also said he thinks Australia might change the singles line-up in the reverse singles, and suggested they are missing Nick Kyrgios.
‘I wouldn’t be shocked if Australia put Sam Groth in to play Murray on Sunday,” said Rusedski. “Murray has basically destroyed Bernard Tomic the last two times they’ve played each other, and he struggles to hurt Murray because basically everything he does is the same as Murray, but not as good. At least Groth (the world’s fastest server) serves at 164mph. This court is suited to Groth and Nick Kyrgios. He was the biggest threat for Australia to possibly get a point against Murray, and I would probably have taken a calculated risk to pick him, although Tennis Australia were looking after his emotional well-being, which is the most important thing. You have to respect them for that.”
Rusedski also had strong words for Dan Evans, who was chosen ahead of the higher ranked Kyle Edmund and James Ward, and came quite close to pulling off an unlikely comeback when he went down 6-3, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 to Tomic.
‘I think it was worth Leon Smith taking a punt on Evans,” he said. “I just wish he was a seasoned pro like Kyle Edmund that put in the work, day in, day out. Dan Evans should be a Top 50 player in my opinion. Evans should spend the next 60 days working his backside off if GB make the finals. People would give their front teeth for the opportunity he has to play alongside the best player Britain has produced as the second singles player, and to help Britain to win the Davis Cup.”
