American Donald Young came back from two sets to one down today against the more experienced Swiss player Stanislas Wawrinka.
Young won against the No. 14 seed in five sets finishing the match off with a tiebreak win 7-1. The American, who reached the semi-finals of Washington with wins over Jurgen Melzer, Michael Russell, Marcos Baghdatis before he fell to more experienced Radek Stepanek. Young claims his success in Washington has given him more confidence and he believes he can win against the much higher ranked guys.
The Chicago born player’s best performance at the US Open was in 2007 when he reached the third round. The crowd supported Young today and he thanked them after the match, “They (the crowd) were everything. I was kind of tired like midway through the third and fourth set. They were chanting my name, which is great, kin of like baseball chants. It just pushed me through. I can’t describe how great it was.”
The third round opponent for Young will be Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina. The No. 24 seed came through in straight sets against Belgium’s Steve Darcis.
World No. 2 Rafael Nadal was leading 6-2 6-2 when his opponent Nicolas Mahut retired. Nadal now faces David Nalbandian of Argentina, who defeated the No. 30 seed Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia in four sets.
Nadal and Nalbandian are 2-2 in matches. The last time the two played was at the ATP World Tour Masters in Miami when Nadal won in three sets.
