Twenty children from Clovenstone Primary School, Edinburgh enjoyed a big surprise on Tuesday. The Aegon GB Davis Cup Team and Captain Leon Smith took time out of their busy preparations to serve up a winning start to the day for this local breakfast club.
The children were invited to watch Team GB practice at the Emirates Arena ahead of their first Davis Cup semi-final since 1981, but little did they know that the team, which includes;
· Andy Murray
· Kyle Edmund
· James Ward
· Jamie Murray
· Dominic Inglot
had an ace up their sleeve! They tucked into a feast of eggs, fresh fruit, cereals, smoothies and some delicious pancakes served by the team and heard directly from the players about the importance of a healthy start to the day.
In addition to sponsoring British Tennis and the Aegon GB Davis Cup Team, Aegon sponsor a breakfast club initiative that aims to give Edinburgh schoolchildren a healthy start to their day.
Carolyn Didcock, Head Teacher, Clovenstone Primary School said: “Aegon Breakfast Club gives school children in Edinburgh a great start to their day by providing a free healthy, breakfast for those who need it most. They’ve proven to be a good way to improve attendance and concentration, as well as social skills and help children get into good eating habits early on in life. Sadly, it’s often the case that some of the children who attend our breakfast clubs wouldn’t have eaten anything since lunchtime the day before so this breakfast can make a big difference”.
Leon Smith, Captain of the Aegon GB Davis Cup Team said: “There is nothing more important than a healthy start to the day a lot of thought goes into what the team eats. It’s great we were able to give something back and talk to the children about healthy eating and get them excited about the upcoming tie. I hope we’ll be able to give them something to cheer about this weekend with a win against Australia.”
Tara McGregor-Woodhams, Head of Brand & Sponsorship, Aegon UK said: “I’m extremely proud of the work that Aegon does to help children in the communities around us. A big thank you to the Team for taking time out of their preparations and giving the children the opportunity to meet with some of their sporting heroes.”
