Bob and Mike Bryan, the top seeds, three-time US Open men’s doubles champions and 11-time Grand Slam tournament champions, made a stunning departure from the US Open yesterday, falling to Ivo Karlovic and Frank Moser, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. It is the first time the Bryans have lost in the first round of a Grand Slam since the Australian Open in 2001, a string of 39 majors, and the first time they’ve lost in the first round here since 1999. In fact, the Bryans have failed to reach at least the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam just twice in their last 27 majors entering yesterday.
In other doubles results, the wild card tandem of Taylor Townsend, 15, and Jessica Pegula, 17, won their first-round match in the women’s draw, as did the No. 4-seeded.
