The Swiss Superstar Roger Federer won his opening round tonight at Arthur Ashe Stadium against Santiago Giraldo of Colombia 6-4 6-3 6-2.
The match was tougher for Federer than the scoreline suggests. The Swiss took the first set in in 36 minutes after racing ahead 5-1. The Colombian came fought back but Federer was too strong and got the set 6-4.
In the second set Federer’s game was a little shaky at times.“It was quite up and down, getting used to the conditions. He did well playing on this court for the first time and it was a pleasure playing against him,” Federer said. The past US Open Champion was simply too good for Giraldo in the third set. The match lasted one hour and 46 minutes.
The five times US Open Champion has only won one title this year and it was in Doha back in January. His Grand Slam results have been good this year. He reached the semi-final of the Australian Open (l. Djokovic), followed by a final loss to Rafael Nadal at the French Open. His worst Grand Slam result this year so far came at Wimbledon when he lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals.
Today’s win was the number 224th for Roger Federer at a Grand Slam tournament, Jimmy Connors is currently holding the record for winning 233 Grand Slam matches.
Federer will face Dudi Sela of Israel in the second round. Sela took out Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci in five sets today. If Federer wins his match against Sela he will have to play the winner of Marin Cilic of Croatia and Bernard Tomic of Australia, both of these players are capable to put a stop to Roger’s US Open campaign 2011.
