China’s Shuai Peng had a comfortable win over American Varvara Lepchenko 6-3 6-4 in her first round. Peng’s best result in the last Grand Slam of the year came last year when she reached the third round. Shuai Peng is currently ranked No. 14 on the singles ranking. She has never been past the 4th round in a Grand Slam.
Next up for Peng is Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria, who cruised past France’s Virginie Razzano 6-2 6-3 in one hour and 19 minutes.
The number two seed Russian Vera Zvonareva blitzed past qualifier Stephanie Foretz Gacon of France 6-3 6-0. Zvonoreva was last year’s runner up. The Russian also won a doubles title at the Open in 2006 partnering Nathalie Dechy of France.
Zvonareva hit 19 winners today to advance into the second round where Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko is waiting. Bondarenko won easily against Lucie Hradecka of the Czeck Republic 6-3 6-0.
