Number eight seed Mardy Fish stormed through into the second round after a win over Germany’s Tobias Kamke 6-2 6-2 6-1.
The American’s hardcourt summer has been a great one with a win in Atlanta (b. Isner), a final in LA (l. Gulbis), final in Montreal (l. Djokovic), and he finished off with a semi-final loss to Andy Murray in Cincinnati. Fish is also the winner of the 2011 Olympus US Open Series.
The World No. 8 dropped his serve in the first game today but after his slow start he came back and broke Kamke’s serve seven times to advance into the second round. Mardy’s best result at the US Open was in 2008 when he reached the quarterfinals. Last year he lost in the fourth round. Fish has now been in the quarterfinals in three out of four Grand Slams. His best performance at Roland Garros was this year when he reached the third round.
“It’ hard to say I expect to see myself in the second Saturday of the US Open because I’ve never done that before. I’ve been close once, but I’d like to get there now. I feel like I belong there. I can get there,” Fish said of his chances to reach a semi or a final at the US Open this year. He added, “If I were to pick a tournament, a Grand Slam that I could win, it would be this one.”
Fish will face Tunisian qualifier Malek Jaziri in the second round. Jaziri took out promising Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker in his first round 4-6 6-1 6-4 6-2. This is Jaziri’s first appearance at the US Open. He is currently ranked No. 181 in singles and No. 267 in doubles.
