It’s the week before a Grand Slam and what have the Aussies been up to:
Jarmila Gajdosova was at the Texas Tennis Open in Dallas this week. The Aussie was seeded number seven in the main draw. Her first round opponent Sorana Cirstea of Romania downed the Aussie in three sets 3-6 6-4 6-2.
Western Australian Casey Dellacqua partnered Swede Sofia Arvidsson in the doubles in Texas. The two reached the semi-finals where they lost in two sets to Alberta Brianti of Italy and Sorana Cirstea of Romania. Dellacqua was also in the singles qualifying draw where she won a round but lost in the second to Angelique Kerber of Germany. Glad you’re back Casey and good luck at the US Open next week!
Anastasia Rodionova had to win three tough matches in the qualifying at the New Haven Open at Yale to gain access to the main draw. Unfortunately, France’s Marion Bartoli ousted the Aussie in the first round 6-1 6-4.
None of the Australian girls had much luck in the US Open qualifying. Olivia Rogowska lost in the first round to Petra Rampre of Slovenia in two tough sets. Sally Peers lost to the number 25th seed Silvia Soler-Espinosa of Spain in the first round 6-4 6-4. Peers will lose a lot of important ranking points this week after last year’s US Open success.
Isabella Holland was blasted off the court by the number four seed Romanian Edina Gallovits-Hall 6-1 6-0.
Wimbledon girls’ Champion Ashleigh Barty received a wildcard into the qualifying. Barty lost first round to Julia Glushko of Israel 6-4 6-4.
Good luck next week to the Australian ladies in the main draw, Casey Dellacqua, Jarmila Gajdosova, Jelena Dokic, Anastasia Rodionova and Sam Stosur.
Former world number one Lleyton Hewitt has pulled out of the US Open this week. Hewitt was awarded a wildcard into the Winston Salem Open last week. The South Australian lost to World No. 81 Blaz Kavcic. Hewitt has been bothered by a foot injury all of this year and has decided against playing at the US Open. Lleyton won the US Open title 10 years ago this year.
Australia’s number one player Bernard Tomic is not having much luck since Wimbledon. Tomic lost in the first round at the Winston Salem Open to Igor Andreev in three sets.
Former top ten doubles player Paul Hanley of Queensland was the only Australian representative in the doubles at the Winston Salem Open this year. The Aussie teamed up with tall Belgian doubles player Dick Norman. The Aussie/Belgian team lost in the first round to Brazilian team Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares.
There were five Australian men in the US Open qualifying draw this week. Veteran Peter Luczak lost in the first round to number eight seed Greg Zemlja of Slovenia 6-1 6-4.
Big serving Victorian Chris Guccione didn’t have any luck either this week and lost to Canadian Vasek Pospisil 7-6 (4) 7-5.
Greg Jones reached the second round of qualies before losing to Go Soeda of Japan 6-3 6-3.
The No. 14 seed Matthew Ebden of Western Australia won his first round against another Aussie James Lemke 6-0 6-3. Ebden lost in the second round to American wildcard Bradley Khlan in three tough sets.
Marinko Matosevic was given Lleyton Hewitt’s wildcard after Hewitt pulled out due to his foot injury. C\arsten Ball replaced Matosevic in qualies where he won a round and lost to American Rajeev Ram in three sets in the second round. Matosevic and Tomic are the only two Australian men in the main draw at Flushing Meadows.
