MEET THE PRESS: Only Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova met with the US Open media on Saturday with Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams originally scheduled to attend but did not.

Said R-Fed with opening questions directed Hurricane Irene: “Sure, it’s somewhat scary, you know, because we don’t know how hard it’s going to hit us. I’ve got family. We’re in New York City; it’s not just a regular city. It’s quite something with all the buildings. So it’s unusual, but we’ll follow the news closely.”

And from Sharapova: “Well, I’m a Florida girl, so I’m used to this stuff. I think everyone’s a bit overreacting about everything, but of course you have to take precaution and all that. But, I mean, where are we going to go? I just hope that our hotel is nice and tough and sturdy,” she added with a chuckle. “That’s all we can do, right?”

TWEET OF THE WEEK: @BryanBros: “Just got some big news. We’re having a baby girl! Time to break out the pink paint. If you have any cute names for me, let ‘em rain in!”

TWEETS OF THE DAY: From @PatrickMcEnroe: “Bracing for #irene!! Stay safe everyone”

From PHShriver: “it’s all just beginning in NYC. I have enough supplies for a small army. cell phone is charged. spoke to my kids. I am in ready position.”
