U.S. Open seeds finalized: Djokovic and Federer lead the way, Nadal eighth
By Ricky Dimon
With the Western & Southern Open concluded, the seedings are set for the U.S. Open. David Ferrer is traveling to New York, so for now we can assume he is in the draw and thus can take a look at how the bracket might look.
This is how the seeds currently shape up, and the groups in which they will go into the proverbial sorting hat at Thursday’s draw ceremony:
1
1) Novak Djokovic
top of the draw, opposite from Roger Federer, will play 25-32 in third round, 13-16 in fourth round, and 5-8 in quarterfinals
2
2) Roger Federer
bottom of the draw, opposite from Djokovic, will play 25-32 in third round, 13-16 in fourth round, and 5-8 in quarterfinals
3-4
3) Andy Murray
4) Kei Nishikori
one on Djokovic’s side, one on Federer’s side, will play 25-32 in third round, 13-16 in fourth round, and 5-8 in quarterfinals
5-8
5) Stan Wawrinka
6) Tomas Berdych
7) David Ferrer
8) Rafael Nadal
will play 25-32 in third round, 9-12 in fourth round, and 1-4 in quarterfinals
9-12
9) Marin Cilic
10) Milos Raonic
11) Gilles Simon
12) Richard Gasquet
will play 17-24 in third round and 5-8 in fourth round
13-16
13) John Isner
14) David Goffin
15) Kevin Anderson
16) Gael Monfils
will play 17-24 in third round and 1-4 in quarterfinals
17-24
17) Grigor Dimitrov
18) Feliciano Lopez
19) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
20) Dominic Thiem
21) Ivo Karlovic
22) Viktor Troicki
23) Roberto Bautista Agut
24) Bernard Tomic
will play 9-17 in third round
25-32
25) Andreas Seppi
26) Tommy Robredo
27) Jeremy Chardy
28) Jack Sock
29) Philipp Kohlschreiber
30) Thomaz Bellucci
31) Guillermo Garcia-Lopez
32) Fabio Fognini
will play 1-8 in third round
Among the dangerous unfloaters in the field are Borna Coric, Nick Kyrgios, Alexandr Dolgopolov, Benoit Paire, Fernando Verdasco, Vasek Pospisil, Steve Johnson, Marcos Baghdatis, Jerzy Janowicz, and Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Based on the seedings, potential third-round showdowns include Nadal vs. Fognini, Federer vs. Seppi in a rematch of their Australian Open surprise, Monfils vs. Tsonga, Goffin vs. Thiem in a battle between doubles partners, and an all-Croat clash featuring Cilic–the defending champion–and a red-hot Karlovic.
Gasquet passed Isner in Cincinnati, leaving the 6’10” American as the 13th seed instead of the 12th. That means Isner will match up with a 1-4 seed in the fourth round instead of a 5-8 seed. Nobody wants to see his big serve on the other side of the net, so that could be bad news for Djokovic, Federer, Murray, or Nishikori. Of course, it may be even worse news for Isner.
If Ferrer ends up withdrawing prior to Thursday morning, Cilic would move up to No. 8, Isner to No. 12, Dimitrov to No. 16, Seppi to No. 24, and Leonard Mayer would snag the 32nd seed.
