It’s not unusual to have withdrawals from a Slam but what is interesting is how many and who. By the time the US Open rolls around a lot of players’ bodies are worn out. Tennis is a sport with no real off-season (unless you can call 3 weeks an off season). There has been talk for years about shortening the season by a month or two but that doesn’t look to happen anytime soon.
Below is a list of the present withdrawals and reason/injury.
Men:
Lleyton Hewitt (AUS) – currently ranked #188…Hewitt had received a WC into the Open but had to make the difficult choice to withdraw after the problem with his foot surfaced again after his loss to Blaz Kavcic in the first round of the Winston-Salem Open.
Milos Raonic (CAN) – the young Canadian decided to withdraw to give himself more time to rehab after hip surgery in July
Tommy Robredo (ESP) – left thigh injury
Sam Querrey (USA) – still recovering from recent elbow surgery
Pablo Cuevas (URU) – Unknown reason
Jeremy Chardy (FRA) – decided to withdraw due to an elbow injury that he has had since Wimbledon
Robert Kendrick (USA) – as reported here on 10sballs.com…Kendrick has been suspended from competing until January 22, 2012 https://archive.10sballs.com/2011/08/22/cas-decision-in-the-case-of-robert-kendrick/
Women:
Kim Clijsters (BEL) – injured stomach muscle
Alisa Kleybanova (RUS) – battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Lourdes Dominguez- Lino (ESP) – unknown reason
Anna Chakvetadze (RUS) – ankle injury
Dinara Safina (RUS) – Continued issues with her back
