Former World No. 1 Carlos Moya has captured his second ATP Champions Tour title at the Optima Open in Knokke-Heist in Belgium.
The popular Spaniard beat former Wimbledon Champion Richard Krajicek in the final 6-3 6-2. “It’s important to win still so having the title here is really good. It’s been my first time in Belgium this week and I’ve really loved it. The crowd have been great, the weather had been good and it has been an honour to be on the same court as so many of my idols. I hope I’m invited back to play next year and defend my title,” Moya said.
Carlos Moya is ranked number two on the ATP Champions ranking. Mark Philippoussis is still at the top but is only leading Moya by 100 ranking points. The Spaniard said, “It’s nice to be playing well enough to be up there. I am one of the younger guys on Tour so that helps but I still stay fit and put a lot into my tennis still because I still have so much fun playing and the Champions Tour is perfect for that.”
The play off for third and fourth place was between Guy Forget of France and Mats Wilander of Sweden. Forget took out the Swede in two sets 6-4 7-6 (4).
The next stop for the ATP Champions Tour will be in Chengdu in China. This is the third time the tournament has been held in Chengdu. The event will be held October 27 – 30.
