Even if the World No. 4 Andy Murray won the Western & Southern Open crown in Cincinnati today because his opponent World No. 1 Novak Djokovic had to pull out, it has given the British No.1 some much needed match practice before the US Open next week.
Andy Murray was 6-4 3-0 up when the World No. 1 Djokovic had to pull out due to a shoulder injury. “I just could not serve. I served an average of 90 miles per hour the first serves, and I could not play forehands. I cannot beat a player like Murray today with one stroke,” Novak said.
Murray broke Djokovic’s serve early in the first set. “I would have obviously liked to have won by finishing the match. But it happens sometimes. I have to look at the week as a whole. It’s been a very good week. Coming in here I had played badly in Montreal, so I needed a good week,” Murray said.
This is the second title of the year for the 24-year-old Brit. He was the winner at Queens just before Wimbledon. Andy was the runner up at the Australian Open in January and he reached the semi-finals of both Roland Garros and Wimbledon losing to Rafael Nadal both times.
Novak Djokovic’s win/loss record is now 57-2. The Serb has already won five ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments this year.
Champion Murray took home a massive prize money cheque of $496 000 and he earned himself 1000 ATP Tour ranking points.
