* Bad day for mid-level seeds: Tsurenko tops Muguruza, Gavrilova upsets Safarova, Hercog beats Makarova

* Ivanovic edges Govortsova to make it likely that she’ll stay Top Ten

* Bencic extends Wozniacki’s summer slump; Kvitova falls to Azarenka

Singles – Second Round: (2) Simona Halep (WC) def. Jelena Jankovic 6-3 6-4

We haven’t seen much of Simona Halep lately, but maybe that’s good; she looks as if she’s rejuvenated. When this ended, she was slugging it out with Petra Kvitova and Caroline Wozniacki for the #3 ranking, but that’s over now. Jelena Jankovic’s loss means that she will fall from #23 to no better than #25.

 

Singles – Second Round: Victoria Azarenka def. (3) Petra Kvitova 6-2 6-3

It’s now official: Petra Kvitova has a(nother?) fatigue illness. She has been cleared to play. That’s not the same as being up to playing. Throw in the fact that Victoria Azarenka is much, much better than her ranking and you get this blowout, which keeps Azarenka ahead of Belinda Bencic in the contest for #20, although that is far from settled. Kvitova will remain at #4, with Simona Halep keeping the #3 spot. The big question for Kvitova, now, is whether she can hang on to the #4 spot after Cincinnati. We’d say Halep is safe in the Top Four, but Kvitova will have to contend with Caroline Wozniacki for the last Top Four spot. Fortunately, she got a little help.

Singles – Second Round: Belinda Bencic def. (4) Caroline Wozniacki 7-5 7-5

There really seems to be something wrong with Caroline Wozniacki this summer. She won’t lose her #5 ranking, but this means she won’t climb, either. Belinda Bencic is still battling it out with Victora Azarenka for the last Top Twenty spot, although Azarenka has a significant lead.

Singles – Second Round: (5) Ana Ivanovic def. (Q) Olga Govortsova 6-4 7-6(7-4)

This was a very close match, although hardly a pretty one — there were fifteen breaks, and Ana Ivanovic had ten double-faults. She’ll have to do a lot better than that if she wants to defend her points — we’d guess that this win will be enough to keep her Top Ten (she would have been no better than #11 had she lost), but she’s still close to the bottom of the Top Ten. On the other hand, she’s the only seed left in her quarter.

 

Singles – Second Round: (6) Agnieszka Radwanska def. (LL) Julia Goerges 7-5 6-3

Despite her seeding, Agnieszka Radwanska came here ranked a mere #14, and this won’t change things. But she extends her winning streak in Canada. Julia Goerges remains stuck below #50.

 

Singles – Second Round: Daria Gavrilova def. (7) Lucie Safarova 4-6 7-5 7-5

The good news for Lucie Safarova is, with so many other seeds out, there is effectively no chance of her falling in the rankings. She might rise. But if she had won this, her chances of rising would have been even better. Daris Gavrilova is up around #38; she can perhaps start thinking about what it would take to a U. S. Open seed. (The answer is, about 200 more points. Maybe slightly less.)

 

Singles – Second Round: (Q) Lesia Tsurenko def. (8) Garbine Muguruza 7-5 6-1

Lesia Tsurenko had enough bandages on to look pretty beat-up, but her game obviously was feeling just fine! This took only about an hour and a quarter, but it takes Tsurenko to right around her career high of #47. Garbine Muguruza has a shot at #8 despite the loss, but she loses what could have been an easy chance to rise to #7 or higher.

 

Singles – Second Round: (Q) Polona Hercog def. (11) Ekaterina Makarova 6-2 6-7(5-7) 7-5

When Ekaterina Makarova won the second set, we thought, “Finally; here she comes!” But she didn’t. She will fall from #12 to at least #13 and perhaps #14.

 

Singles – Second Round: (13) Angelique Kerber def. (Q) Monica Puig 6-2 6-3

Seven straight wins for Angelique Kerber, although she hasn’t moved in the rankings yet. If she can win two more matches, she’ll probably hit the Top Ten.

 

Singles – Second Round: (15) Sara Errani def. Madison Brengle 6-3 2-6 6-3

Considering that these two are among the most defensively-minded players on the WTA, this was surprisingly quick — only about an hour and three-quarters. On the other hand, there were fifteen breaks in 26 games… Madison Brengle won just four points on second serve (out of 23 second serve point played). Brengle will not rise above the #43 ranking she came in with, but Sara Errani keeps the pressure on Andrea Petkovic in the contest for the #15 ranking.

 

Singles – Second Round: (16) Andrea Petkovic def. (Q) Heather Watson 6-4 6-3

A big event for Germans, for some reason; Andrea Petkovic was the third to reach the third round, and Kerber would later make it four. That let Petkovic increase her lead over Sara Errani in the contest for #15.

 

Singles – Second Round: Roberta Vinci def. (Q) Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-3 6-3

In another three weeks, Mirjana Lucic-Baroni is going to see her U. S. Open and Quebec City results come off, and she’s likely to turn back into a pumpkin. Guaranteed, really, if she can’t start beating the Roberta Vincis of the world. For the moment, though, she has put herself back into the Top Fifty. Right behind Vinci, in fact, who with this win rises from #53 to #46 in safe points.

 

Singles – Second Round: Sabine Lisicki def. Barbora Strycova 7-6(7-3) 6-4

Sabine Lisicki defends her points; she will certainly keep the #24 ranking she came in with, and will likely rise to #23. But Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who seems to have gone into a significant funk, will fall at least one place.

 

Singles – Second Round: Alice Cornet def. Dominika Cibulkova 6-3 6-2

Dominika Cibulkova seems finally to be making progress, but taking on a fellow defensive specialist was perhaps more than she was ready for. She’ll remain well below #50. Alize Cornet hasn’t moved much yet — perhaps one place — but any additional wins could let her move much more.

 

Singles – Second Round: (Q) Carina Witthoeft def. Alison Riske 6-4 5-7 6-3

Carina Witthoeft was the third qualifier to make the third round here, which sounds like a lot until you remember that there were twelve qualifiers in the draw. Still, she puts herself in the Top Fifty — and, in the process, knocks Alison Riske out.

 

Doubles – First Round: (6) Errani/Pennetta def. Barthel/Minella 6-1 6-3

Interesting to see Sara Errani playing doubles again, and not with Roberta Vinci. We’ve no word on whether she’ll stick with it, though.

 

Doubles – First Round: Chan/Chan def. (7) Hlavackova/Hradecka 6-4 3-6 10-8

Not a huge upset; the Chans are a good team and they like the surface.

 

Doubles – First Round: Medina Garrigues/Parra Santonja def. Chuan/Liang 3-6 6-1 10-8

 

Doubles – First Round: (WC) Bencic/Cibulkova def. Arruabarrena/Klepac 6-1 7-6(7-5)

Belinda Bencic is on quite a doubles hot streak all of a sudden. Let’s hope it doesn’t affect her singles too badly.

 

Doubles – First Round: (WC) Fichman/Zhao def. C Chan/Kania 1-6 6-4 10-5

 

Doubles – First Round: (WC) Abanda/El Tabakh def. Dabrowski/Rosolska 7-5 7-5

Impressive for Canada — two teams of wildcards into the second round. This is particularly interesting because Francoise Abanda is so new, and Heidi El Tabakh is ten years older, a veteran who has been invisible for so long that we thought she’d retired!

 

Doubles – Second Round: (3) Mattek-Sands/Safarova def. Jurak/Kops-Jones 6-2 6-2

Racqual Kops-Jones really needs Abby Spears back. True, they might well have lost this anyway, but not like this!

 

Doubles – Second Round: Begu/Olaru def. (8) Muguruza/Suarez Navarro 7-6(7-5) 0-6 10-4

Garbine Muguruza and Carla Suarez Navarro both crashed and burned in singles; perhaps it’s no big surprise that they cratered in doubles also.
