Former World No. 1 Roger Federer came crashing out of the Rogers Cup yesterday. Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Federer 7-6 (3) 4-6 6-1 to advance into the quarterfinals.

Federer said, “Tonight he played well and he played extraordinary shots as we know he can do. I was not able to do that. He beat me at Wimbledon so I don’t know how much of a surprise it is.”

Tsonga defeated Federer in the quarterfinal at this year’s Wimbledon. The Frenchman came back from 2-0 down. He also beat Federer two years ago at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Canada.

Nicolas Almagro will face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals after a two set win over France’s Richard Gasquet 7-6 (5) 6-3. Tsonga and Almagro have played four times and Tsonga leads 4-0. Last time they played each other was at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Madrid in May this year.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic’s next opponent will be Gael Monfils, who saved three match points against Viktor Troicki of Serbia. The World No. 7 advanced into the quarterfinals of Montréal after his three sets win 3-6 7-6 (0) 7-6 (5).

Number six seed American Mardy Fish downed Latvian Ernests Gulbis in three sets 4-6 6-3 6-4 to set up a meeting with Stanislas Wawrinka. Fish lost to Gulbis recently in the final of the Farmers Open in LA.

“I believe Fish has been playing well during the past year and a half. He’s now top 10. He won his first tournament this season in Atlanta and he’s playing well,” Wawrinka said.
