Joao Sousa needed two hours and four minutes to eliminate fifth seed Fabio Fognini 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(6) at the Konzum Croatia Open Umag on Friday. The World No. 51 took out the 32nd-ranked player on the Emirates ATP Rankings after saving a match point at 6-5 in the final set tie-break.
Sousa made a quick start, breaking Fognini twice to open the first set before closing it out 6-2 on his third set point. Fognini tidied up his serving in set number two, not conceding a break point and going one-for-one on break chances of his own to force a deciding set. In the third set, the players traded early breaks before matters needed to be decided in a tie-break.
In the next round, Sousa could face local favourite and seventh seed Borna Coric, or second-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut.
