Singles – First Round: (21) Madison Keys def. Stefanie Voegele 6-7(6-8) 6-3 6-4
This is only a first round match, and it took two days, but it will likely suffice to keep Madison Keys Top 25.
Singles – First Round: Elizaveta Kulichkova def. Yanina Wickmayer 3-6 7-6(8-6) 10-8
Another 70 points lost for Yanina Wickmayer. She’s going to be just barely Top Hundred after this.
Singles – Second Round: (1) Serena Williams def. Timea Babos 6-4 6-1
With this, Serena Williams has defended her points, so anything else she does can only add to her lead over the field. Rest of the tennis world, be very, very afraid….
Singles – Second Round: (4) Maria Sharapova def. (Q) Richel Hogenkamp 6-3 6-1
With Simona Halep out, Maria Sharapova has now almost clinched the #3 ranking, and has a good shot at #2. She leaves Richel Hogenkamp still below #100.
Singles – Second Round: (6) Lucie Safarova def. (Q) Hsieh Su-Wei 6-2 6-3
Lucie Safarova still has a lot of defending to do, but in light of the next result, this is likely to keep her #6.
Singles – Second Round: (Q) Bethanie Mattek-Sands def. (7) Ana Ivanovic 6-3 6-4
These days, you just don’t want to see Bethanie Mattek-Sands across the net.
Amazing that she is still far below the Top Hundred. Ana Ivanovic loses only a few points, but this ends her chances to reach #5
Singles – Second Round: CoCo Vandeweghe def. (11) Karolina Pliskova 7-6(7-5) 6-4
CoCo Vandeweghe likes grass; she has a title on it. Still, this is pretty discouraging for Karolina Pliskova. Another chance to hit the Top Ten — gone. Oh, she still might back in; she’s currently #10 in safe points. But she’ll need a lot of luck. Vandeweghe ought to rise above #45.
Singles – Second Round: (14) Andrea Petkovic def. Mariana Duque-Marino 6-3 6-1
With two results to defend this week, Andrea Petkovic remains in danger of losing her Top Fifteen spot. But she’s keeping herself close — and she faces an unseeded opponent next.
Singles – Second Round: (16) Venus Williams def. Yulia Putintseva 7-6(7-5) 6-4
One more win each and Venus and Serena Williams will meet, with Venus very possibly having to win that to reach the Top Fifteen.
Singles – Second Round: Aleksandra Krunic def. (19) Sara Errani 6-3 6-7(2-7) 6-2
If it were allowed, Sara Errani would probably just skip the grass season. There really isn’t much point for her. Simply winning her opener may have gained her a spot or two, but this means no chance to reach the Top Fifteen.
Singles – Second Round: (22) Samantha Stosur def. Urszula Radwanska 6-3 6-4
Urszula Radwanska really, really likes grass; there isn’t much doubt that it’s her best surface. And Samantha Stosur doesn’t like it at all. But Radwanska just can’t seem to get her game back. Stosur lost her opener last year, so this has her in the Top Twenty in safe points, although she certainly hasn’t clinched yet.
Singles – Second Round: (23) Victoria Azarenka def. Kirsten Flipkens 6-3 6-3
Like Stosur, Victoria Azarenka has started to add points, but not enough to move her ranking much, at least so far.sorry to see flip lose this one. Last year she was a semi finalist at wimby. ( or was it 2 years ago ?) Bad luck. Flipper is a beauty to watch on the grass.
Singles – Second Round: (29) Irina-Camelia Begu def. Lesia Tsurenko 7-5 6-7(4-7) 7-5
Grass does not seem to be Irina-Camelia Begu’s surface, but she has a lot of points coming off this week, so this was a big win for her, keeping her around #30.
Singles – Second Round: (30) Belinda Bencic def. (Q) Anna-Lena Friedsam 7-5 4-6 6-0
Belinda Bencic just keeps winning — eight straight, defending her points from last year. She’s now very close to the Top Twenty.
Singles – Second Round: Heather Watson def. Daniela Hantuchova 6-4 6-2
Heather Watson is now just below the Top Fifty — although her odds of making it back in are pretty poor; she faces Serena next. Daniela Hantuchova also rises somewhat, but remains below #60.
Singles – Second Round: Kristina Mladenovic def. (WC) Jelena Ostapenko 6-4 7-5
Kristina Mladenovic is now absolutely guaranteed to reach a career high; she is close to the Top Thirty.
Singles – Second Round: Sloane Stephens def. Lauren Davis 6-4 6-4
Lauren Davis reached the third round last year, so she is likely to fall below #80. One more win might suffice to put Sloane Stephens back in the Top Thirty; it will be close.
Singles – Second Round: Zarina Diyas def. (Q) Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-5 6-1
One more win and Zarina Diyas will have defended her points, but she needs two more to hit the Top Thirty.
Doubles – First Round: (1) Hingis/Mirza def. Diyas/S Zheng 6-2 6-2
A very small first step toward clinching the #2 ranking for Martina Hingis.
Doubles – First Round: (2) Makarova/Vesnina def. Keys/Robson 6-4 6-1
No move yet for Makarova/Vesnina; the contest for #3 remains tight:

2..(2) HINGIS ………….7080*
3..(3) MAKAROVA ………..5935*

Doubles – First Round: (5) Kops-Jones/Spears def. Bertens/Riske 6-3 6-2
Doubles – First Round: (6) Muguruza/Suarez Navarro def. Dulgheru/Soler-Espinosa 6-4 6-2
Whatever caused Carla Suarez Navarro to look so bad in singles obviously didn’t affect her doubles.
Doubles – First Round: (10) Garcia/Srebotnik def. Smitkova/Xu 6-1 4-6 6-2
Garcia/Srebotnik pick up where they left off at Eastbourne. Srebotnik has a pretty good chance to return to the Top Fifteen this week.
Doubles – First Round: Gajdosova/Tomljanovic def. (13) Y Chan/J Zheng 2-6 6-4 6-2
And Chan/Zheng had looked so good at Eastbourne! But no second Wimbledon title for Zheng Jie, obviously.
Doubles – First Round: (14) Krajicek/Strycova def. Aoyama/Voracova 7-5 7-5
Doubles – First Round: (15) Rodionova/Rodionova def. Falconi/Gavrilova 6-7(6-8) 6-2 6-0
Doubles – First Round: (16) Medina Garrigues/Parra Santonja def. Kulichkova/Rodina 3-6 6-3 6-4
Doubles – First Round: H Chan/van Uytvanck def. Goerges/Witthoeft 6-2 6-2
Doubles – First Round: Konta/Sanchez def. Doi/Vogt 6-3 7-6(7-5)
Doubles – First Round: Knapp/Vinci def. C Chan/Melichar 6-2 6-4
A decent start for Roberta Vinci, but she is still in danger of falling out of the doubles Top Twenty.
Doubles – First Round: Niculescu/Savchuk def. Pliskova/Pliskova 2-6 6-4 6-4
Doubles – First Round: Date-Krumm/Schiavone def. Jans-Ignacik/Klepac 6-4 6-2
Doubles – First Round: Black/Raymond def. Larsson/Martic 5-7 6-3 7-5
Cara Black defends her points, and is almost certain to stay Top Ten, but she clearly needs to do better than this if she wants to go much higher.
Doubles – First Round: Rae/Smith def. Cepelova/Voegele 6-2 6-1

GOSSIP: Wimbledon Village doesn’t need much air conditioning 300 odd days a year. By this week AC is needed. Almost all of the players and people involved in the tourney are without AC in the flats and homes they’ve rented. We’ve stayed at the Dorchester. No AC. So there’s a heap of hot grumpy tired players, coaches and support teams. Plus tv announcers and manufacture staff that are all hot. Grumpy and un comfy.
It’s wasn’t hot enough then there was a small fire and an evacuation on the grounds of the All England Club. But it was small and electrical and the fire brigade is on site. So it was all well dealt with.
Gossip. Watch out for Alison Van Uytvanck. She can play some big ball. Only 22 years old. Current singles ranking is 46 and rising. The chicks really talented. From the great tennis country of Belgium.
