CLASSIC CLASH OF THE CHAMPIONS IN BIRMINGHAM QUARTER FINALS
Friday’s bumper Aegon Classic Birmingham crowd may have divided loyalties when former champions Sabine Lisicki and Daniela Hantuchova meet on the Ann Jones Centre Court.
Hantuchova, the tournament’s 2013 champion, has long been a crowd favourite in Birmingham, while Lisicki won the title at the Edgbaston Club in 2011 and reached the Wimbledon final two years later. Both are sure to attract plenty of support when they meet in the quarter-finals.
“I have a lot of special memories of England, not only Birmingham but definitely Birmingham as well. The crowd and I really connect well here and I love to be part of that. I’m very happy to be back here,” said Lisicki.
Elsewhere on another star-studded day three of the WTA Top Ten will be in action across the day on the Ann Jones Centre Court. Top seed Simone Halep has look assured so far on the pristine grass courts but will be wary of giant-killing Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic. Mladenovic, who has already knocked Eugenie Bouchard and last year’s finalist Barbora Strycova out of the tournament, will be keen to add to her tally of big name scalps.
World No.9 Carla Suarez Navarro takes on World No.12 Karolina Pliskova in another clash of illustrious names in the quarters. Fourth seed Angelique Kerber, who boasts a world ranking of 10 in the world, faces 19-year-old Czech Katerina Siniakova.
The tournament is enjoying a hugely successful year, thanks to its all-star player field and improved fan experience. Ticket sales are already up more than 25 percent on 2014 figures and a packed weekend of world class tennis is expected to push the figures even higher.
