Since the age of 12, Braden was good enough to earn invites to play in River Forest, Illinois and in Milwaukee. Later in life while being interviewed by Sports Illustrated, Braden showed off his charismatic side, by sharing with the interviewer that he had once hitched hiked to Detroit to watch Don Budge play Bobby Riggs. He went through all the trouble of hitch hiking to see Don Budge hit his backhand. This quote alone shows how big of a sports fanatic Vic Braden really was, and continues to be.
