Federer and Hewitt potential match up in Davis Cup

Australia will play Switzerland in the Davis Cup World Group Playoffs in September. The Australian team will have the choice of venue and surface but it’s yet to be decided.

Australian Davis Cup Captain Pat Rafter said, “Switzerland will be a tough opponent, but certainly not unbeatable. I will chat with Tony Roche and the team about our options in terms of surface but I am excited by the challenge and I know the team will be too.”

Switzerland first played in the Davis Cup in 1923. They have played a total of 151 ties and have a 69-82 win loss record. The country’s most successful year was in 1992 when they lost in the final to the Americans 3-1. The USA’s team consisted of Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Jim Courier and John McEnroe. Marc Rosset and Jakob Hlasek played for the Swiss team at the time.

Australia has a great Davis Cup record. They have won the trophy 28 times. Over the years players like John Newcombe, Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, Tony Roche, Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt have played.

Davis Cup holds a special place in Lleyton Hewitt’s heart. He has played 30 ties since he debuted in 1999. He has won 46 matches and lost 12. His most memorable match was against Roger Federer in 2003 when he came back from two sets to love down and 5-2 in the third. Hopefully Roger will be available and Lleyton fit to play in September.

The Swiss team members are: Roger Federer (3), Stanislas Wawrinka (16), Stephane Bohli (152) and Marco Chiundinelli (208).

The Aussies hold a 4-0 record against the Swiss. The countries have played each other four times.

The Australian team qualified on the weekend beating China 3-1. The Australia vs. Switzerland tie will be played 16th to 18th of September.
