Doubles Update – SkiStar Swedish Open & MercedesCup
SkiStar Swedish Open is well under way in Båstad. The event is an ATP World Tour 250 tournament and is played on clay. No. 1 seeds Robert Lindstedt of Sweden and Horia Tecau of Romania will take on Dustin Brown of America and German Michael Kohlmann in the second round. Lindstedt/Tecau took out Julian Knowle and Igor Zelenay in the first round 10-8 in the third set.
The No. 3 seeds Julien Benneteau of France and Jamie Murray of Great Britain was ousted by the Brazilian team of Franco Ferreiro and Andre Sa in straight sets 6-3 7-6 (4).
Another surprise at the SkiStar Swedish Open was the No.2 seed Frantisek Cermak and Filippo Plasek losing to Blaz Kavcic and Pere Riba 6-4 6-3.
Simon Aspelin, who is playing his last tournament on the ATP Tour in Båstad before retiring teamed up with another Swede Andreas Siljestrom. Simon and Andreas won easily against Batrik Brydolf and Michael Ryderstedt, who received a wildcard in to the doubles event 6-2 6-4.
At the MercedesCup in Stuttgart the top seeds Lukasz Kubot (POL) and Oliver Marach (AUT) got beaten in their opening round by Daniele Bracciali (ITA) and Dick Norman (BEL) 6-3 7-6 (8).
Second seeds Jurgen Melzer of Austria and Philipp Petzschner of Germany won comfortably over the Italian pairing of Fabio Fognini and Paolo Lorenzi 6-4 6-2.
Christopher Kas and Alexandr Peya, the No. 4 seeds are the only team through to the semifinals after winning in two easy sets 6-4 6-0 against Alexander Waske and Mischa Zverev.
Looking at the ATP Doubles Team Ranking this week, Bob and Mike Bryan are well ahead with almost doubled the ranking points of the No. 2 team Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor.
Mike and Bob Bryan played in America’s Davis Cup team against Spain on the weekend where they won their doubles rubber against Marcel Granollers and Fernando Verdasco 6-7 (3) 6-4 6-4 6-4.
