STRONG PLAYER FIELD HIGHLIGHTS UPCOMING USTA NATIONAL
SENIOR WOMEN’S HARD COURT TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club to Host National Tournament May 11-17, 2015
An impressive player field, which includes past and present national champions, will highlight the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Senior Women’s Hard Court Tennis Championships, scheduled for Monday, May 11 through Sunday, May 17 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, 2000 Spindrift Drive, La Jolla, Calif., 92037.
The senior women’s tennis event will feature singles and doubles in the 50 and over, 60 and over, 70 and over, 80 and over, and 90 and over age divisions. The tournament attracts the best players from across the country, making the tournament field of competitors the strongest in the nation in each age division.
“We are delighted to have such an outstanding field of players for this year’s event,” said Tournament Director Bill Kellogg. “Tennis fans are going to have a great opportunity to watch the best senior competitors in the country playing for their respective national championships.”
Former touring tennis professional Ros Nideffer is the defending champion and top seed in the 50s singles division. Nideffer, who lives in the San Diego community of Rancho Bernardo, reached a career-high No. 15 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) singles rankings in 1990.
The 54-year-old Nideffer, a two-time Wimbledon singles quarterfinalist, captured the French Open doubles title and reached the US Open doubles final in 1983. Nideffer also won the 50s singles title at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club in 2012.
Two former singles champions are among the seeded players in the 50 and over division. Frances Chandler of Jackson, Tenn., who won 50s title in 2011, is seeded second. Tracy Houk of Montara, Calif., the 50s singles champion in 2013, is seeded fourth. Houk has reached the 50s singles final for the last four years (2011-2014).
Tina Karwasky of Glendale, Calif., is the top seeded player in the 60 and over singles division. Karwasky is the three-time defending champion and is attempting to win the 60s title for the fourth consecutive year. Carolyn Nichols of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., is the second seed.
