Singles – First Round: D Young def. Y Lu 5-1, retired
This has the minor distinction of having been the first men’s match to finish at this event. It lets Donald Young defend his points, but it costs Yen-Hsun Lu second round points. He’ll probably end up a little below #65. DONALD YOUNG Jr. Is playing some BIG BALL .keep your eyes peeled. # YIM
Singles – First Round: C Berlocq def. (WC) T Kokkinakis 6-4 3-6 6-2
This took more than two hours and twenty minutes, and by the looks of things, Thanassi Kokkinakis ran out of gas at the end. Little wonder, after that much time on the court! This is not an upset, but given Kokkinakis’s recent form, a lot of people are probably surprised. He’s going to stay below the Top Hundred for now. ( THIS KID IS THE REAL DEAL ,GIVE HIM SOME SPACE TO GROW INTO ALL THE “CONFUSION” OF TENNIS AT THIS LEVEL)
Singles – First Round: J Struff def. B Becker 3-6 7-6(12-10) 6-4
Benjamin Becker wasn’t defending much, but he does lose a few points; this may cost him his Top Forty spot. And he isn’t likely to regain it on clay!
Singles – First Round: J Sock def. G Soeda 6-3 6-4
This really is an amazing comeback for Jack Sock. He still has a few points to defend, but we’d guess this will keep him Top Fifty. And he and Vasek Pospisil are the #2 seeds in the doubles!
Singles – First Round: (WC) H Chung def. M Granollers 6-0 4-6 6-4
Hyeon Chung is only 18, with minimal ATP experience, so it’s clear that whoever gave him a wildcard got a good tip here. Marcel Granollers lost his opener last year also, so he doesn’t lose any points, but this might cost him his Top Fifty spot.
Singles – First Round: (Q) F Krajinovic def. D Lajovic 2-6 7-6(7-5) 4-2, retired
After just seven matches, we already had two retirements. It looks like it will be a long week…. This will leave Dusan Lajovic still below the Top Seventy.
Singles – First Round: (Q) J Duckworth def. (Q) D Dzumhur 6-3 3-6 6-3
A very minor upset, but hardly a surprise; James Duckworth has been having a solid year.
Singles – First Round: (Q) R Haase def. (WC) K Edmund 6-2 6-2
Robin Haase just worked his way back into the Top Hundred, and this assures that he will stay there.
Singles – First Round: J Nieminen def. M Matosevic 6-3 6-3
Jarkko Nieminen defends his points. One more win might well move him back above #70. Marinko Matosevic will almost certainly remain stuck below #75.
Singles – First Round: (PR) N Almagro def. S Stakhovsky 6-3 6-7(3-7) 6-4
A promising sign for Nicolas Almagro; he makes it unlikely that Sergiy Stakhovsky will reach the Top Fifty. And if Almagro can do this on hardcourt, what will he do on clay?
Singles – First Round: A Ramos-Vinolas def. J Sousa 6-2 6-2
Joao Sousa shows occasional signs of coming out of his funk, but only occasional. Those brief flashes of better form certainly aren’t enough to help his ranking. He loses third round points, and will fall to #55 or lower — probably lower.
Singles – First Round: D Thiem def. D Schwartzman 7-6(7-0) 7-5
Diego Schwartzman has been playing pretty well lately, but this loss means that he will stay in the #60 range. Dominic Thiem might hit the Top Fifty if he can win his next match; two more wins would assure it.( WATCH OUT FOR SCHWARTZMAN . THIS GUY ISNT VERY TALL. BUT SERVES BIG, BUILT LIKE A LITTLE BULL AND HE HAS TOP 20 Ability !)
Singles – First Round: (Q) A Krajicek def. D Istomin 6-4 6-4
Denis Istomin falls to 4-9 on the year (talk about a hectic schedule!), and will slip below #65.
Singles – First Round: T Smyczek def. (Q) A Menendez-Maceiras 4-6 6-3 6-4
Adrian Menendez-Maceiras falls to 0-5 in his ATP career. Hard to reach the Top Hundred with a record like that….
Singles – First Round: S Querrey def. V Estrella Burgos 6-4 6-3
Poor Victor Estrella Burgos. Now that everyone knows his story (of retiring from the game, then coming back in his thirties to produce the best results of his career), he’s getting a lot of attention — and very few results. This means that he will remain below the Top Fifty. Sam Querrey has now defended his points; he needs only a little more to hit the Top Forty.
WE THINK THIS WAS A LAST ROUND OF qualies ? ( Ruben Bemelmans is a great Belgian player. His game is there. But he hasn’t really jelled yet. )
Singles – First Round: J Monaco def. (Q) R Bemelmans 7-5 6-7(5-4) 6-4
It’s a good thing Juan Monaco gets a day off after this — this took two and a half hours. The good news is, it’s all free points for him; he lost his opener last year.
