Happenings at Wimbledon – Wednesday

Andy Murray didn’t get to play on Centre Court but he looked just as comfortable on Court One. Murray had no problems beating world No. 83, Tobias Kamke of Germany, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5. Murray said, “It doesn’t bother me too much if I am not on Centre Court.” The Scot is now playing Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia.

The amazing Spaniard Rafael Nadal made short work of American Ryan Sweeting. Rafa played on the Centre Court with the roof closed even though the sun was out. Nadal said, “That was something strange. The tournament is outdoors, not indoors, and I prefer to play outdoors. They told me they were going to open the roof but the minute they predicted a shower.” The score was 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

Britain’s Laura Robson had a surprise win over Angelique Kerber of Germany. The former junior Wimbledon Champion won 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Robson is now up against No 5 seed Maria Sharapova.

American powerhouse Andy Roddick blew Romanian Victor Hanescu off the court with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 win. A-Rod’s parents were present. It’s their first visit to Wimbledon to see their son play. “I felt pretty good out there. I served well, returned well and was aggressive going forward, so all in all, it was a very good day,” Roddick said.

Ivo Karlovic and Stanislas Wawrinka both had surprising losses. Karlovic lost to world No. 93 Lukasz Kubot of Poland, 7-6, 6-3, 6-3. Big serving Karlo is always a dangerous contender at Wimbledon. Wawrinka lost to Italian Simone Bolelli of Italy, 7-6, 6-3, 7-6.

Tomas Berdych made short work of Julian Benneteau of France winning 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. Berdych is now playing Alex Bogomolov Jr, who beat Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina easily 6-0, 6-3, 6-4.

Spotted in the Royal Box yesterday was singer Diana Ross and the English cricket team. The Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla Parker-Bowles enjoyed herself watching Venus Williams taking on Kimiko Date-Krumm.
