10sBalls Editors note – Yes we dusted this story off for another read. It’s just so accurate in describing Roger Federer’s brilliance that here it goes in the Merry go round again.

Editors Note: 10sBalls just keeps getting Roger requests. The photo gallery got a lot of Peeps wanting more. We went into our vault and came up with this by Craig Cignarelli. We know Irene is happy she would like a weekly Gallery till Roger graces a court again. Do we think it will be in Perth? That’s a lot of tennis…. We always need to keep Irene happy as she pushed us into the newsletter. Which was a great idea. This site loves tennis. We are here to promote growth in the sport.

A THOUSAND TIMES GOODNIGHT  BY CRAIG CIGNARELLI

I saw Baryshnikov a few decades back, the light landing of his shoes upon the boards, the way his fourth finger always pointed down such that his entire being intimated relaxation, the position of his head always held straight – as though balancing a glass of water upon it, – the inhuman amount of time he spent in the mid-jump air, as if he and gravity had an agreement.

About a month ago, Misha returned to the stage with William Dafoe in a Los Angeles performance. A friend bought me a ticket and I sat center stage to see the wrinkled eyes and greying hair now topping what once was the youthful embodiment of feather. I knew it was going to be a night of disappointment. But then he moved, a pointed toe flicking through the air to land soundlessly upon the stage, those delicate fourth fingers still tilted toward the earth, the unmoving head still still.

It’s strange to think back eighteen years ago, when that starry-eyed Swiss kid walked onto the professional tennis court with ambition in his heart and talent in his hands. He had Baryshnikovian traits – the ability to float across grass, clay, and cement, the statuesque skull, the absence of sweat. And yet, there was a violence about him, as though his kinetic tranquility was a gathering of sunlight to be transformed into a laser strike.

Yesterday though, I saw him on the court again, competing beneath an Australian sky. His skin is more weathered now, his face fuller and hair more kept. The grace, however, remains. It has been there for a thousand hand shakes that have ended with a smile, a thousand sets of balls struck up to the adoring crowds, a thousand post-match stretches where he walks into the locker room and his colleagues give him a “good on ya.”

The worlds of these two geniuses have probably never collided. After all, collisions don’t happen when things move this smoothly. Both, however, bring a certain grace to their art, a joie de vivre joined with an elegance of movement. It is like watching, well, Federer and Baryshnikov. For that, we are a thousand times grateful.
