After defeating Russia’s Igor Andreev in his opening match, Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) was on the court today for his second round match against Joao Sousa of Portugal at the Estoril Open, an ATP World Tour 250 event.
Raonic, who is ranked a career-best no. 27 in the world this week, quickly showed the way against his opponent, ranked no. 254 in the world, who benefited from a wildcard into the main draw and beat his compatriot Gastao Elias in the first round. Raonic served six aces in the match and maintained a 66 percent first serve percentage en route to a 6-3, 6-3 victory. The win means that he has qualified for his first ATP World Tour clay court quarter-final and has won eight of ten matches so far in the clay court season. The 20-year-old boasts an impressive 22-7 record in 2011 and is the first Canadian since Sébastien Lareau in 1998 to win 20 ATP matches in a season.
Raonic, seeded fifth in the tournament, will play world no. 22 Gilles Simon of France in tomorrow’s quarterfinals.
